  • Browse the web — ask it to look up the latest news, find a recipe, or check today's weather. It will search the internet and summarise what it finds.
  • Create images — describe what you want and ChatGPT will generate a picture for you. Try: "Draw a cartoon cat wearing a top hat."
  • Read files — upload a PDF, spreadsheet, or photo and ask questions about it. For example, upload a bank statement and ask "What did I spend the most on last month?"

These features are available on both the free and paid plans, though free users have daily limits.

Connecting ChatGPT To Your Other Tools

Once you are past the basics, the biggest time saver is to stop copying and pasting text between ChatGPT and your other apps, and let ChatGPT reach them directly.

  • Connectors — link ChatGPT to apps such as Google Drive, SharePoint, Outlook and GitHub so it can read your actual files and messages instead of you pasting them in. You pick which apps to connect, and you can disconnect at any time.
  • Custom connectors (MCP) — ChatGPT supports the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI tools to other software. If a service you use publishes an MCP server, you can add it as a custom connector and ChatGPT can work with it directly. Availability and whether a connector can write as well as read depend on your plan.
  • Projects — group related chats, files and instructions in one place. Everything in a project shares the same context, so you do not re-explain your situation each time.
  • Scheduled tasks — ask ChatGPT to run something on a timer, such as a Monday morning summary of a topic, and it will run and notify you without being asked again.

  1. Go to chatgpt.com in your web browser.
  2. Click "Sign up" and create a free account using your email address, Google account, Microsoft account, or Apple ID.
  3. Type your first message in the text box at the bottom of the screen and press Enter. Try asking: "What are three fun things to do in London this weekend?"

Tips for Beginners

  • Be specific in your requests. Instead of "Write something about dogs," try "Write a 100-word paragraph about why golden retrievers make great family pets."
  • If the first answer is not quite right, ask ChatGPT to change it. You can say things like "Make it shorter" or "Use simpler language."
  • You can have a back-and-forth conversation. ChatGPT remembers what you said earlier in the same chat, so you can build on previous messages.
  • The free version is very capable for everyday tasks. You do not need to pay to get started. If you want higher usage limits and extra features like deep research, there are paid plans starting from $8/month (Go) or $20/month (Plus).
